Rainmaker Tour Part III: Heathens all around
13 days into the Rainmaker tour. As I’m writing this, we’re racing a train running parallel to I-80 East. We’re gaining ground on it but the next time we stop for gas or a break I’m sure it will leave us far behind. A little while ago I woke up from a 3 hour nap to find us stopped at a gas station in Wamsutter , Wyoming . Grassy plains and telephone poles. As I walked in to get a sandwich I saw a group of bikers in leather. One of them had a leather mask on with a bird-beak looking hole for his nose and two slits for his eyes. On the back of his leather jacket there was a patch across the top that said “HEATHENS”. I went and got the camera and asked him if he would mind if I took a picture of his jacket. He said, “Why?” I explained that we’re in a band called the Band of Heathens and we’re on tour across BFE, Wyoming and I’d like to take a picture of him for our records. Then a guy got out of a car next to us, and he said, “No man, I’m in the Heathens.” Apparently, he’s in a band in California called the Heathens (www.theheathens.net) that does rock ‘n’ roll for motorcycles and film. The California rock ‘n’ roll heathen was following and filming the motorcycle heathen gang from California to Colorado for a documentary. The motorcycle heathen said he’s seen us on myspace and I can take his picture as long as his picture don’t end up nowhere. I took his picture. We trade CD’s and now we’re back on the road to Colorado . Heathens all around.
The last few days in Utah were great. The Spur in Park City was particularly blazing. Lots of old friends from the last time we came through during Sundance came out and it was a blast. Trevor Nealon joined us on keys for most of the Utah shows. Playing at the art festival was great too. I bought some art from Kari von Wening and Jan Bush. Check them out. www.karivonwening.net. This morning I woke up at 4am in Park City , Utah and I spent a few hours working on a new song. We packed up and hit the road for Denver . I passed out in the back of the van and that’s when I woke up surrounded by more Heathens than normal. Now we’re looking forward to another week of shows in Colorado and New Mexico before heading home. We finally passed the train. For now.
